On September 12, members of Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer, as well as other notable artists, took the stage at New York City’s Best Buy Theater, located in the heart of Times Square, for the “Metal Masters Clinic” sponsored by Best Buy Music Gear, Samson, Zoom and Hartke.
Hundreds of fans watched as metal icons by Charlie Benante and Frank Bello (Anthrax), David Ellefson (Megadeth), Kerry King (Slayer), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) demonstrated the best that metal has to offer. The clinic was full of surprises, including a group performance of Diamond Head’s “Am I Evil?” with Scott Ian of Anthrax on guitar.
The highlight of the evening came during the clinic’s final two songs, as former-Pantera singer Philip Anselmo unexpectedly joined the metal masters for renditions of Pantera's “A New Level” and “Hostile”. It marked the first time that Anselmo had sung Pantera songs since the band’s last show in August 2001. Check out the video here. After the clinic, audience members were treated to an autograph signing, followed by one final surprise… a full Anthrax show in celebration of their new record release, Worship Music.
“The goal was to put all of these legendary artists together for one evening and to create a clinic experience on a scale that has never been done before,” says Mark Menghi, Samson’s Director of Marketing. “Watching the audience learn about music from their icons was a unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”
