On April 12, members of Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer, as well as other notable artists, took the stage at West Hollywood’s Key Club, located on the famed Sunset Strip, for the third installment of the “Metal Masters” clinic series sponsored by Samson, Zoom, Hartke and Best Buy.

Super group Adrenaline Mob, featuring Metal Master Mike Portnoy (Ex-Dream Theater), kicked off the show with a 30-minute set. The performance included a number of songs off their debut album, Omertà.

After Adenaline Mob, a sold-out Key Club watched as metal icons Charlie Benante and Frank Bello (Anthrax), David Ellefson and Chris Broderick (Megadeth), Dave Lombardo (Slayer) and Portnoy demonstrated the best that metal has to offer, including two Iron Maiden instrumentals (“Ides of March” and “Transylvania”), an epic 3-way drum battle and Q&As with the audience. Kerry King (Slayer) took the stage for a group performance of Slayer’s “Raining Blood” and “Angel of Death”.

The clinic was full of surprises, including another unannounced Metal Masters appearance by former-Pantera singer Philip Anselmo. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Pantera’s landmark 1992 album Vulgar Display of Power, Anselmo led the Metal Masters through the album’s first five songs in order: “Mouth for War”, “A New Level”, “Walk”, “Hostile” and “This Love”.

The highlight of the evening came during the last song, as metal legend Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath / Heaven & Hell) joined forces with all the Metal Masters for a finale rendition of the Black Sabbath fan-favorite “Hole In The Sky”.

“The Metal Masters Clinic has grown into something bigger than we could have ever imagined,” says Mark Menghi, Samson’s Director of Marketing. “The players, lessons, musical jams and audience combine to create one of the greatest experiences any music fan or aspiring musician could witness. It’s an honor to be a part of it.”
